The co-founder of Biohm, Dr. Mahmoud Ghannoum, is considered one of the top microbiome researchers in the world. He coined the term “mycobiome”, addressing the need to better understand the fungal component of the microbiome and how it works with bacteria.

Dr. Ghannoum is a tenured Professor and Director of the Center for Medical Mycology at the prestigious Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

  • Putting the Focus on Fungi
In his research on the gut microbiome, Dr. Ghannoum and his team discovered that plaques formed by bacteria and fungi in the gut, known as biofilms, are 10 times thicker than the biofilms formed by bacteria alone. These thick biofilms are hard to break down and cause digestive health complications.
Most microbiome-based products do not consider the fungi that make up the mycobiome or biofilms and therefore only address part of the equation.
Researchers have studied the bacterial microbiome for centuries, but they’ve largely ignored the mycobiome.”
